LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY CREATIVITY IN THE WORK OF ANASTASIA ZVETAEVA

A. Rakhimzhanova

Vienna University (Vienna, Austria)

Anastasia Zvetaeva was born 1894 in Moscow in a family of academics, she was educated in schools in Germany and Switzerland. Her first work was published in 1915, she wrote philosophical essays, poems, myths and novels. As her writings were deemed counter-revolutionary she was imprisoned numerous times in the 1930s. Many of her works were written in various GULAGs and finally she went into exile in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, where she lived with her son.63

Based on a close inspection of Zvetaevas writings, this project I am working aims at reconstructing her creative context as well as the representation of the discourses of identity and culture. “Creative context” refers to the theory of Makhmudov which analyses the elements of stylistic units, the authors’ voice and the thematic idea of a literary work. Furthermore, tracing Zvetaevas writing processes shall give insight into the social, political and cultural background of female writing of a multilingual author in this historical period.

The project combines approaches of philological literary studies with quantitative and cognitive methods. In a first step a software supported (KH Coder) quantitative and qualitative analysis of the texts is performed. On the word level the frequency of certain parts of speech are examined, then, on the sentence level, the sentence structure and the predominance of certain moods, tenses, and cases are analysed. This approach enables to create an annotated corpus of texts from which an analysis can move from the layers of meaning to insight into the literary language, poetic devices, writing process and the mind-set of the author.

The next step is to reconstruct a cognitive reading of the created corpus. This is realized with the linguistic analysis of data produced in step one. From this reading, phenomena such as identity and culture in the writing process of the author is deduced and traced back to the wider discourse on these topics. The deconstruction of the lexis, grammar and poetics shall not only reveal theses phenomena in the texts but shall also enable to analyse the linguistic-cognitive context of the author from the perspective of creativity. The creative literary context shall be illuminated as symbol of thinking and writing of the individual author in the socio-historical context.

In this paper I will focus on the first step, the quantitative analysis. I will present data detailing Zvetaevas stylistic units based on the lexical reservoir of the analysed texts. By applying approaches of cognitive science to the symbolic-cultural use of language I will show the cognitive potential of the literary language of a female voice within the contemporary context. Finally, I will give an outlook on the cognitive reading of the corpus that shall provide insight into a wide range of phenomena of the author’s creative context.

Cognitive analysis of linguistic and literary creativity in the works

of Anastasia Zvetaeva and Maria Lazar

Rakhimzhanova, Aigerim (Universität Wien, Wien, Austria)

This research will be concerned with the works of two female authors, Maria Lazar and Anastasia Zvetaeva. They both had to endure the suppression of their creative expressions within increasingly totalitarian systems, experienced exile and were polyglot.

Based on a close inspection of their literary works, this project aims at reconstructing their creative contexts as well as the representation of the discourses of identity and culture in their writings. Studying their writing processes shall give insight into the social, political and cultural background of female writing in two distant cultures but with comparable experiences.

The project combines approaches of literary studies and linguistics. A software supported (KH Coder) analysis and a cognitive reading of the corpora of their writings will create the basis for studying literary language, the role of identity and culture in the writing process and links to the wider discourses. It shall reveal common aspects in the relations of their texts and society.

The aim is to gain a better understanding of female authors and their conflicts with contemporary trends by using the theories of the creative context (Makhmudov) and cognitive science (Lakoff, Fillmore et al.). Furthermore, the state of editing, publishing, reception and their significance for literary history will be assessed.

The symbolic-cultural use of language in the given texts reflects the cultural identities of the authors and offers material for an analysis of the cognitive potential of the literary language, the female voices of the contemporary context of the authors. An approach of cognitive science offers insight into these circumstances.
